Editing

While writing is my passion, I had a dry spell of writing work for a while, thanks to the proliferation of content mills and AI writing in recent years. For a while, I switched my focus to editing work, which was easier to find than writing work. I still enjoy editing today. It engages a different part of my brain than writing, and I like the variety.

Web Editing

During my time at FIXD, I was promoted from Content Creator to Copy Editor, ensuring clarity and accuracy in automotive articles as well as the usual spelling, grammar, and readability. I currently do freelance editing for WikiMotive, and previously for UTV Sports and ATV.com. I am open to additional opportunities in this area. Rates are negotiable, but I use the Editorial Freelancers Association rates as a guide.

Books for Self-Published Authors

When you submit your book to a publisher, your editor has all the power. Some will make your book even better than before. Others make changes you would not prefer, and publish those changes under your name. As a self-publisher, you retain full control over what goes into print. But what if you want a second set of eyes to review your book first?

When my friend M. Allyson Szabo’s galley copy of Cook Small, Live Large! arrived, I offered to take an editing pass for her as a favor. She was so pleased with the results that she has hired me to edit subsequent books ever since. This got me thinking that perhaps other self-published authors would like to avail themselves of my services as well. I have since edited additional books for Allyson, including The Clay Table, as well as The Motorcycle Camp Cookbook by Amanda Zito, better known for her YouTube motorcycle travel channel, As the Magpie Flies.

My goal is to use my editorial powers for good. I will catch those pesky typos that sat under your nose, but you didn’t notice because you’ve been staring at your work for so long. I will make sure your sentences don’t run on, your verb tenses agree, and that your prose is flowing and easy to read. However, full control remains with you, the author. You have the power to accept or reject my changes. If you wrote a grammatically incorrect sentence for a specific reason, then that is what will remain. The final decision is yours.

Rates

I prefer to charge by the word. I am usually working on multiple projects at the same time, making it difficult to track how much time I spend on your project in particular.

Copy Editing / Proofreading: 3¢ per word
This is simply checking for typos, spelling errors, and grammar mistakes.

Developmental Editing: 4¢ per word
In addition to copy editing and proofreading, I will make broader suggestions, such as whether a paragraph in one section might be more appropriate elsewhere, whether a section should be shortened, or whether another should be expanded with more information.
